PC Computing Basics 1
4 sessions of 2.5 hours
To begin this class, you need to know nothing about computers and simply have a desire to learn. Students will learn how to properly start and stop a Windows computer. From there we will teach and give you experience with the most used computer functions: using the mouse, keyboard, and desktop, word processing, accessing the Internet, creating and responding to emails, and how to use flash drives for performing classroom exercises. Prerequisite: none
Knowledge of these basic functions is a prerequisite for all other computer-based classes including PC Computing Basics 2.
Lesson 1 – Hardware, the Software, and the Desktop
● Introduction to the computer – what it is and what it does ● Introduction to computer hardware and software ● Overview of the desktop and the start button ● How to open and close a program ● How to use the keyboard and the mouse ● Introduction to the WordPad program ● How to turn on and shut down a computer
Lesson 2 – Using WordPad to Create a Document
● How to type and edit text ● How to open and close a document ● How to use the navigation keys and scroll bars ● Word wrap and paragraphing ● How to delete, undo and redo ● How to format text
Lesson 3 – Introduction to Internet Basics
● How to connect to the Internet using a browser ● Parts of a browser ● How to navigate to web pages ● How to use tabs ● Introduction to Edge ● How to navigate websites ● How to search the web using Google ● How to enter a web address into the address bar
Lesson 4 – Introduction to Email
● How to recognize an email address ● The basic features of email software: read, reply to and compose email ● Attachments; How to attach a file or download an attachment ● How to add contacts to an email address book ● Email etiquette ● Email security
